Following her graduate dance training at The Naropa Institute in Boulder Colorado, Margaret gradually immersed herself in the world of social dance, from ragtime tea dances to Cape Breton square sets. With its improvisational structure, intimate embrace and dynamic possibility of exchange between lead and follow, the Argentine tango was the first partner dance to fully capture her imagination. As a participant in two of the first Puente El Tango dance/study tours of Buenos Aires, Margaret initially trained with both milongueros (older traditional dancers) and the younger experimental dancers. A primary force in the early days of tango in Colorado, Margaret had an opportunity to work closely with a number of influential teachers including Daniel Trenner, Rebecca Shulman, Brooke Burdette, Pablo Pugliese, Florencia Tacetti, Juan Bruno, Lucianna Valle, Omar Vega, and Tomas Howlin.
An accomplished choreographer and performer Margaret has produced a number of solo and collaborative works, including her internationally acclaimed one woman show Tales from Tangoland.
Initially drawn to Nova Scotia as a member of the Shambhala community, Margaret offered her first tango workshop in Halifax in 1996 at Halifax Dance. She now makes Halifax her home. She hopes that Tangonova will plant the magical seed of tango in yet another great port city.

Tuesdays
Hey Folx! We set up the teachers and volunteers meetings as a 'class' that you're an attendee for! This is where we talk about strategy, calendar, discuss our classes, and ensure we're booked in for marketing. If you can make it, we promise it will be quick.
We're back with open practice 1940s swing dance for all levels. We will be teaching a variety of swing dance variations, including Lindy Hop, Charleston, Blues, Solo Jazz, and some choreographed dances. We'll adapt the class level and subjects based on the level of participants, so these classes are very suited to beginners and continuing dancers alike. Bring your friends or come alone and join our fun dance community.
Jordi has danced Lindy Hop and Charleston, the original Swing dances, for many years. In addition to teaching at DownStreet, he is always actively taking classes, participating in swing dance workshops across Atlantic Canada, and learning from international teachers. In 2019 he performed a Lindy Hop routine at PEI's own Dancing with the Stars Hospice PEI event, and received the Judges Choice award. It's the goofy nature of this dance that always keeps him laughing and he is excited to share the joy with anyone wanting to try Lindy Hop, or wanting to get back into it.
This multi-talented dancer has also been teaching the Thriller choreography for about 5 years and enjoys performing it every Halloween!

In this WCS Fundamentals Class we will be building on and refining the five basic steps learned in the Intro classes, breaking them down into easy-to-follow components. You will begin to explore connection, a crucial aspect of West Coast Swing, and learn the subtleties of lead and follow techniques, enhancing your ability to communicate seamlessly on the dance floor. You will also enrich your dance vocabulary with new patterns, variations, and styling options to add flair and creativity to your movements. This four-week class follows a progressive curriculum, ensuring that each session builds upon the previous one.
Whether you're a beginner looking to establish a strong foundation or an intermediate dancer aiming to refine your skills, this class is designed to enhance your understanding of this versatile and stylish dance form.
Prerequisite: Knowledge of the five basic steps (Push Break, Left Side Pass, Right Side Pass, Push Break with Tuck Turn, and Basic Whip)
Laura has been dancing, teaching, and performing West Coast Swing, Hustle, Salsa, and many more for a little more than a decade. When she teaches, her emphasis is on creating a dance class that doesn't have any age, size, mobility, or enthusiasm limits!
With zero childhood dancing other than "rockin' out" to the Beatles in her living room when she was 3, Laura brings the ability to teach students to be kind to themselves when learning new dances or simply how to dance for the first time.
She started learning partner dances in her 30s and keenly remembers the awkward stage of no proprioception or coordination because it was pretty much last Tuesday.
A block of four classes costs $30.
The four week blocks will start on April 6th and May 4th.

This class will pay homage to a variety of burlesque styles and tricks of the trade. Learn classic moves, how to tell a story through movement, improve on burlesque skills, and build confidence in yourself as a performer. Each block will be 6 classes focused on a particular element of burlesque, followed by a special showcase class (free to students participating in the block and closed to the public) to perform anything they've been working on. This class is a safe space to explore yourself as a sexual, sensual being in a fun and tantalizing way while building body positivity and self expression.
This class is catered to all levels, from beginners to the seasoned dancer.
Bring a brimmed hat, gloves, a button up/zip up shirt or vest.
With over 30 years of dance experience, including jazz, modern, ballet and lyrical, Marieve is "poised" to delve back into the world of burlesque. She was the house choreographer for Charlottetown Burlesque from 2016-2018, and has performed in Toronto and on PEI in this style over the last 13 years. Burlesque allows you to explore your desires, unleash your fetishes, poke fun at society, and expound your creativity. It is as much about the story telling and acting as it is about dance, and she hopes to bring an appreciation to her students with this informed class.
