Hey Folx! We set up the teachers and volunteers meetings as a 'class' that you're an attendee for! This is where we talk about strategy, calendar, discuss our classes, and ensure we're booked in for marketing. If you can make it, we promise it will be quick.
We're back with open practice 1940s swing dance for all levels. We will be teaching a variety of swing dance variations, including Lindy Hop, Charleston, Blues, Solo Jazz, and some choreographed dances. Bring your friends or come alone and join our fun dance community.
Jordi has danced Lindy Hop and Charleston, the original Swing dances, for many years. In addition to teaching at DownStreet, he is always actively taking classes, participating in swing dance workshops across Atlantic Canada, and learning from international teachers. In 2019 he performed a Lindy Hop routine at PEI's own Dancing with the Stars Hospice PEI event, and received the Judges Choice award. It's the goofy nature of this dance that always keeps him laughing and he is excited to share the joy with anyone wanting to try Lindy Hop, or wanting to get back into it.
This multi-talented dancer has also been teaching the Thriller choreography for about 5 years and enjoys performing it every Halloween!

Wednesdays
This is an opportunity for Tango lovers to enjoy practice time together, to repeat, refine and perfect steps and technique learned during the year.
No formal teaching will take place (only coaching, for steps that students already know but want to improve).
It is helpful to wear shoes that allow the dancer to pivot with ease.
Kathleen Wiens kickstarted her dance journey as a student of the Professional Division of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. For 20 years, she has made the social dance-floor a second home while living in LA, Phoenix, Montreal, Winnipeg and across Europe. She brings a legacy learning from her former teachers, each a world champion in their style. She was a member and performer with Liz Lira Dance Company (Los Angeles), UCLA Salsa Society, Imperial Ballroom IDS (Phoenix), and San Tropez (Montreal). After dabbling with Argentine Tango for a decade, she finally saw the light and made a full-time commitment to the magic of the close embrace. Her classes are an invitation for all to find their place in this magical and surprisingly accessible dance!

Thursdays
The summer sessional will run for 4 weeks, with each class introducing a different style or element of the burlesque, and a final showcase in the 5th week where students can present a performance for the rest of the class which they developed on their own with the skills they've acquired. This class will pay homage to a variety of burlesque styles and tricks of the trade. Learn classic moves, how to tell a story through movement, improve on burlesque skills, and build confidence in yourself as a performer. This is a safe space to explore yourself as a sexual, sensual being in a fun and tantalizing way while building body positivity and self expression.
Wear comfortable clothing to move in and either barefoot or in shoes of your choice. Brimmed hat, button up/zip up top, and long gloves if you've got them!
Marieve has over 30 years of dance experience, including jazz, modern, ballet and has taught a variety of dance styles over the last 25 years. She was the house choreographer for Charlottetown Burlesque from 2016-2018, and has performed in Toronto and on PEI in this style over the last 15 years. Burlesque allows one to explore one’s desires, unleash one’s fetishes, poke fun at society, and expound one’s creativity. It is as much about the storytelling and acting as it is about dance, and she hopes to bring an appreciation to her students with this informed class.

Prerequisite: Knowledge of the five basic steps (Push Break, Left Side Pass, Right Side Pass, Push Break with Tuck Turn, and Basic Whip)
Laura has been dancing, teaching, and performing West Coast Swing, Hustle, Salsa, and many more for a little more than a decade. When she teaches, her emphasis is on creating a dance class that doesn't have any age, size, mobility, or enthusiasm limits!
With zero childhood dancing other than "rockin' out" to the Beatles in her living room when she was 3, Laura brings the ability to teach students to be kind to themselves when learning new dances or simply how to dance for the first time.
She started learning partner dances in her 30s and keenly remembers the awkward stage of no proprioception or coordination because it was pretty much last Tuesday.
A block of four classes costs $30.
The four week blocks will start on April 6th and May 4th.

Traditional roots of Belly Dance combined with modern music and dance styles like hip hop, contemporary, latin and jazz. Open to all levels.
This class will consist of learning some foundational Belly Dance skills, moves and techniques, while improving fluidity and musicality along with growing an appreciation of the traditions of Belly Dance origins. Dancers will then build on the foundations of Belly Dance with their own individual styles of dance, and music, by incorporating modern moves and dance techniques. The class will include a warm up - a variation of Belly Dance movements to learn, or build on - combinations of these combined movements - applying them to modern day music styles (not traditional music) - will work on a piece if class so desires.

Meghan says:
I have been dancing my whole life - 20+ years now. I have performed for many years in a variety of styles including hip hop, street, contemporary, jazz, character, ballet, salsa, and a number of other latin styles. I have been performing as a professional Belly Dancer in Charlottetown, and as both a company dancer and hip hop instructor at Dance Virtuosa for many years (ages ranging from 7 - adult). I have always loved learning new styles, new music, and new cultures, and have always found a way to perform wherever I travel. I have participated in Hospice PEI's DWTS, and this year will be officially my 2nd year - partnering with my mom - locally known as Powerhouse Patty. My goal with this class is to not only share my love for Belly Dance, but to showcase the beauty in dance diversity, and how dance and music all over the world can truly bring everyone together to connect as one.

Solo Dance

Wear comfortable, confidence-boosting clothing!
